Shaded questions Block 2

1. How does Fitzgerald's portrayal of the deterioration of the American dream compare to the American dream today?

2. Do the women in the novel reflect the roles of women in the 1920's?

3. Does Nick's middle class perspective affect the reader's perspective on the middle class?

4. Is class structured today the way it was in GG?

5. Is the portrayal of the contrasting desolation and prosperity accurate to the 1920's, as well as the absence of a "moral compass" keeping people from their greed? Is this culture beginning to resurface today, or can it be reflected in modern society?

6. Do East and West Egg and the Valley of the Ashes relate to current perceptions of people's class, education, wealth based on where they live today?

Updates and a look ahead at the week of 12/12-12/16

12/9 or 12/12:
  • Review clauses, phrases and their significance.
  • Discuss "The Market Place"
  • Homework: Read chapters 5 and 6. Pay particular attention to characterization of Hester and Pearl as you read.
  • We handed in book reviews

Updates for the week of 12/6-12-10

Blocks 2 and 5-

On Monday we will work on how to revise book reviews. We will also review the Poetry Outloud rubric.

Wednesday- We will present our poems to the class. Please bring 2 copies of your tone-mapped poem to class. We will not have time for you to leave class to make copies.

Friday-  We will learn how to analyze for style. Revised book reviews are due, and chapters 2, 3 and 4 of The Scarlet Letter are due.


Block 5-

Tuesday- we will work on how to revise book reviews. We will also review the Poetry Outloud rubric.

Updates for the week of 11/28

11/28 and 11/29:
Today in class we practiced your poem.
 We read chapter one of The Scarlet Letter, and we practiced notice and focus techniques in order to predict what the novel would be about.
We reviewed how to write a review.

Due on 11/30 or 12/1 3 copies of the rough draft of your book review.

Poetry Outloud poems will be performed on 12/8 and 12/9.

  • Practice your Poetry Out loud poem at least once each day.
